Why We Smile

Meet Wade:(details are not given to protect his privacy) Monday, Wade’s grandmother emailed the Corneal Dystrophy Foundation. Wade was 5 days old, born in the Midwest.  Wade was diagnosed with CHEDS a major eye problem that could cause blindness without treatment. This condition was such that if surgery was not done, the brain would not be able to train an eye to see. It was important for a surgeon to see Wade as soon as possible. 7:30 pm Monday, Bob contacted a surgeon in Chicago, explained  the situation about Wade and the surgeon agreed to see the baby. BUT permission from the parents were needed. Tuesday…grandmother emailed. Exec Dir. told her to contact parents and have them send permission to surgeon and CDF. Wednesday...Surgeons emailed Exec Dir. said team was in place, since condition of baby’s eyes was so unusual. Two top eye surgeons, One top pediatric surgeon made up the team. Surgery scheduled a few weeks later on one eye. Wade can now see out of one eye. This is why we smile. The Corneal Dystrophy Foundation has a reputation with the Eye Surgeons that when we call and say we need help they listen and work with us to help the patient. We are blessed with our connections
